Jacob Korn

Until todays recommendation i had no clue about Jacob Korn
Jacob Korn is a German producer who released the album “You & Me” a few weeks ago filled with delicious tracks. Jacob Korn is not entirely new to the music scene, a quick search online will show you that he has released numerous EPs with various remixes.

I must admit not to have heard the entire new album, but i wanted to share Jacob Korn with you. We are pleased with the recommendation and looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

Enjoy the music and it’s definitely one to check up on.

Cover It Up: But Take Care

Rihanna and Drake. Not the usual Berri-suspects, but their track “I’ll Take Care Of You” from Drake’s 2011 album “Take Care” is, in this case, worth keeping in remand.

Guilty of blasphemy? I will judge later.

First we’ll take a look at Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa’s version, also released in 2011. Actually a pretty decent take, even though, I’m not really in to Beth Hart’s semi-Winehouse AA-style. Oh and did I mention that Joe Bonamassa is buffing the banana at 3:20?

Back to Rihanna and Drake’s version: You will probably recognize the production from last weeks cover spot-member Jamie XX. In January 2011, his remix of Gill Scott-Heron’s version of “I’ll Take Care Of You” set the way for the 13-track remix album entitled “We’re New Here”.

And here, Gill Scott-Herons masterpiece, is inevitable. Released just a year earlier on his 13th and final studio album “I’m New Here”:

I like the work of Jamie XX, but I basically think it was a mistake to remix that album.

Back on track and a decade earlier, Etta James justifies her place in blues-history with twenty-third studio album Love & the Blues including today’s track “I’ll Take Care Of You”

Before hitting the original version, I’ll have to mention former Screaming Trees front man Mark Lanegan’s version from 1999, Crescent City soul queen Irma Thomas’ version from 1988 and the raw 69-version by O.V. Wright. All of them worth a listen, but I think Gill Scott-Heron’s version kind of summarizes those very well.

Finally it all ends up with Brook Benton and his writing of today’s song “I’ll Take Care Of You”.
Benton, however, seems to have never recorded the track. Instead, blues lion Bobby “Blue” Bland claimed it as his own, cutting it for Duke Records in 1959. What a twist….

Ending notes: I’m not very happy about either the Rihanna/Drake version or the Jamie XX Remix. I think the track’s essence lies in the blues. The pain of the original has been reinterpreted brilliantly by all of the above artists (including Van Morrison and Mick Hucknall) but I just can’t feel sorry for Jamie and his chart-darling friends, though you have to give them credit for actualizing today’s cover song.

The Orb feat. Lee Scratch Perry, Soulman

The good old British electronic music duo The Orb is back with a new EP “Soulman” that is going to be released later this month.
They have gotten Lee Scratch Perry‘s vocals on their track “Soulman”, and it sounds fantastic with their groovy beat.
Enjoy the boys beat on this sunny afternoon.

Cover It Up: Teardrops

Theodor Clausen is going to be posting a weekly post on a single track and it’s various cover versions.
There are a lot of great cover versions out there. A cover version sometimes can be better then the original and other times a well functioning track should just be left alone and enjoyed.
Follow Theodor’s new category “Cover It Up” once a week with tracks that are reborn in new versions.

We are looking forward to it as there are quite a few diamonds in the rough out there.
So here is the first post on ‘Cover It Up

Cover it up. Tear it down

By Theodor Clausen

The self-titled debut of London band The XX was that kind of album that filled in a gap most of us didn’t know existed. On the bonus disc we found “Teardrops”, a heartbreaker’s banger and one of my favourite tracks from the genre-defining debut.

Three years later, and gamers of Grand Theft Auto IV will hear Joss Stone’s version of “Teardrops” on the fictional in-game station “Vice City FM”.

So far so good but this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Year 1998 and the mainstream listeners in England are going nuts in UK-garage inspired pop music. Lovestation takes advantage of that situation and bangs out this version:

I bet Craig David would have loved to do that version.

At that point, most people probably know the track “Teardrops” from Elton John’s twenty-fourth studio album “Duets”. It came out in 1993 and featured k.d. lang on the first track of the album; “Teardops”.

For those of you who are not familiar with Elton John: Ignorance is bliss.
So now we are finally getting there. I will save you for German pop band No Angels, Australian singer Kate Alexa and Sugababes’ versions. They are all too miserable to elaborate on.

So what is yet to be mentioned is the year of 1988 and in this case Womack & Womack’s fourth studio album, Conscience. Fast-forward to track five and you find nothing less than the original version of “Teardrops”. In this context you will definitely find me on the “original” support team.
But listen yourself, which version do you prefer?
